On Sept. 16, the South Alabama Jaguars went to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys (OSU) and came out with a dominant 33-7 win.
A group of five college football programs taking down a power five program, especially on the road, is a rare achievement. This is the second time in program history that the Jags have beaten a power five opponent. In 2016, they beat Mississippi State by one point 21-20 in Starkville.
“I thought our guys are starting to play to the level we’re capable of,” Head Coach Kane Wommack said after the game. “I think the nice thing is we knew we were capable of coming in here and executing at a high level and physically putting a team away.”
In their home opener on Sept. 9, the Jags broke the game open in the second half to win 35 to 17 against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (SLU), making their record 1 and 1 on the season. This time, the Jags were able to play consistent and strong for all four quarters for a shiny 2 to 1 record.
They were able to keep Oklahoma State honest on offense, bringing a balanced attack of the run game and taking shots down the field in the passing game. La’Damien Webb seemed unstoppable, rushing for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns. Caullin Lacy had over 100 yards receiving for the second straight game and a pair of touchdowns himself.
Jaguar defense also held strong, where an early interception by cornerback Marquise Robinson gave the Jags good field position that later led to a touchdown. The Jags were also able to apply constant pressure on all three of the quarterbacks that took the field for the Cowboys with four sacks. The Jaguars defense held the Cowboys to only 208 total yards and one touchdown which was their only points on the night.
Winning the turnover battle and the time of possession helped the Jags put the game away mid 4th quarter and seal a huge win. This might be the most impressive win in the history of Jaguars football.
The Jags will be back in Hancock Whitney Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 23 for their homecoming game against Central Michigan.
