The Adventure Begins: New SATH Club on Campus

It’s no surprise to any student or faculty that college life, while exciting, can sometimes be stressful. That is why multiple clubs surrounding niche hobbies exist and meet on campus to alleviate the stress that students and faculty face.

One such club used to meet on the campus of South Alabama: The TTRPG Club (Table Top Role Playing Game Club). Unfortunately, the club couldn’t meet during 2020 and 2021 due to covid, and was eventually dissolved. Since then, those who like to play tabletop games have had no official meeting space, making it more difficult to reach out to other players. That is why on Wednesday, September 21, 2023, Mr. Hunter Tallent, Mr. O’Berry, and a small culmination of students decided to form a club centered around Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering, and various other tabletop board/card games.

This new club has been dubbed The SATH (South Alabama Tabletop and Hobby) Club. At the interest meeting for SATH, over 20 new members joined by word of mouth alone. The following Wednesday, there were more than 30 members present at the first meeting. The club has since elected a full committee of officers, which includes President Ella Jeanfreau.

“[The club is meant to] be a place where people can have fun with tabletop games, role-playing games, board games, anything they’d like, and to have a place where we can have fun and meet people,” said Jeanfreau.

For the remainder of the academic year, the club will meet every Wednesday from 4:00pm to 6:30pm at the Marx Library in room 181. The meetings alternate between D&D meetings, where people come to play and learn how to play D&D, and MTG meetings, in which members are encouraged to play board games and Magic the Gathering at a casual level. Students of all majors are invited to attend these meetings, even if they have not officially joined SATH yet.
