A Tradition is Born: Campus Celebrates Inaugural Lighting of the Trees

On the brisk fall night of Monday, Nov. 13, 2023, a new tradition was born. Snowflakes danced in the air, and twinkling lights adorned the road of USA South Drive. The stage was set for joy, warmth, and holiday spirit as the Jaguar community came together and celebrated the inaugural Lighting of the Trees ceremony.

The air was filled with excitement and anticipation, and the scent of hot chocolate and apple cider wafted through the crowd, promising a cozy but eventful evening ahead.

Students and faculty were greeted with musical entertainment from the melodious USA Opera Theater. In addition, there were performances by the Jaguar Marching Band, DJ Swiff, the USA Wind Ensemble, the South Alabama cheerleaders, and the Prowlers. Together, they brought the holiday cheer to the photo booth, where the community could take pictures with ol’ St. Nick and pose with holiday props of their own.

University President Jo Bonner sauntered around the event, handing out special holiday “Bonner Buttons” to students and other members of the university community.

“We’ve had a great semester,” President Bonner said. “Starting off with a 19 percent increase in freshman enrollment, we just continue to build. There is so much excitement going around on campus, and today’s tree lighting ceremony is just one example out of many that showcases the enthusiasm around South Alabama.”

Courtney Wolchina, a senior biology ma-jor from Fairhope, AL, was also excited for the festive spirit to reach campus. “The lighting of the trees was such a cute and charming event!” said Wolchina. “I’ve never felt so excited for the holidays and full of Christmas cheer. My favorite part was the fake snow since we don’t get any down here. The hot chocolate was yummy, too.”

The focal point of the celebration was the countdown by Student Government Association President Amya Douglas. As the countdown hit zero, the two 32-foot tall towering evergreens glistened for the first time, and faux snow began to fall from the sky.

The inaugural Lighting of the Trees was not just an event; it was the beginning of a cherished tradition that united the campus community. As the evening unfolded, it became clear that this celebration would be etched in the hearts of all who attended, a bright and festive memory to be revisited for years to come.
