The University of South Alabama Spring Week of Welcome introduced Back to the 2000s skate night on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024. A long line of eager students crowded the student recreation center with anticipation. Many students wore outfits that paid homage to the nostalgic theme.
Long requested by students, Jaguar Productions President Simone Holmes revealed that the event had been in the works since last semester. Music committee chair Albany Young pitched the idea while Jaguar Productions oversaw its progress.
“A lot of students wanted a skate night to happen,” said Holmes. “Instead of taking them to a far away, actual skating rink, we thought we could bring it to campus.”
Before entering the gymnasium, event coordinators instructed students to fill out safety waivers. Afterward, students were marked with a glow-in-the-dark stamp to acknowledge completion of the form and allowed to join in on the festivities on the court.
Jaguar Productions provided skates; however, some students brought personal pairs. A colorful padding covered the floor for students who wished to skate. Vibrant neon lights flooded the gymnasium ceiling while upbeat music played.
Some students strolled onto the dance floor while others talked with friends. Both food and drinks were provided, including pizza, assorted chicken wings, water, and soda.
“I was expecting a lot of people to come, but as far as the line being backed out to the door, I did not expect that so I’m really happy about that,” said Holmes.
The future of Skate Night is looking very promising, according to Holmes.
“Seeing how successful it is so far, it probably will come back,” said Holmes. “Now that we have an idea of how everything goes, we can make it better for future years.”
