As of spring 2024, all food truck locations are accepting bonus bucks through the Grubhub app. In previous semesters, students were only allowed to pay for a meal from the on-campus food trucks with a credit or debit card. This highly anticipated change prompted me to try out some food trucks.
A few years ago, the Student Government Association aimed to elevate the overall student dining experience. A survey was distributed to the student body to determine preferences on new dining alternatives. Through weeks of meetings and strategic planning, the concept of food trucks seemed to be a promising idea, and since their arrival in Fall 2023, they have proven so. These new dining options have not only proven to be tasty, but have also reinforced the notion that food trucks were a much-needed addition to our campus.
Beyond being a great lunch option, they have woven themselves into the fabric of our weekly routines, serving as convenient sources for a snack before class. This initiative gave us offerings such as Sugar Love, Frank N Lola’s, Tin Tin’s Rock and Roll, and more recently, MySix Cooking & Catering, Wacked Out Weiner, and Los Rollin’ Bros.
First, I tried out MySix Cooking & Catering, which offers a variety of your favorite, quintessential American cuisines. The menu includes burgers, chicken wraps, and over 15 distinct flavors of chicken wings. There are plenty of sides to choose from, ranging from the sweeter taste of fried okra to the savory indulgence of loaded tater tots.
For my meal, I opted for a timeless classic—a cheeseburger accompanied by a side of loaded fries. The burger came dressed with a medley of fresh lettuce, crisp dill pickles, and American cheese, all encased within a perfectly toasted, buttered bun. The burger patty was impeccably cooked to be well-done, and the velvety melt of American cheese heightened the flavor. The crinkle-cut fries were bathed in melted cheese and topped with bacon, ranch, and a delicious blend of seasonings, creating a balance of salty and savory.
The Los Rollin’ Bros food truck is another hit on campus, offering an amazing option for Mexican food. Their menu features a selection of quesadillas and tacos, complemented by sides such as street corn or chips and queso—perfect for a post-lecture pick-me-up.
For my meal, I chose one of the more popular menu items—the birria tacos. The corn tortilla, delicious beef, adorned with melted shredded cheese, and paired with fresh cilantro and onion created the perfect bite. A consomé stew on the side elevated the meal, infusing it with an additional layer of tasty complexity. The perfect combination of juices and spices in the consomé, designed to complement the tacos, is something that you cannot pass up.
Although these locations are on the pricier side, it is worth it. Every Monday and Tuesday, you can catch the food trucks by the Moulton Tower from 11 a.m. until the trucks decide to close. To keep up with the hours and dates, you can follow @usadining on Instagram.
