IMC’s beloved book fair stays busy this spring

The Independent Music Collective’s (IMC) monthly book fair for March was another success! The last Wednesday of every month, the Humanities Courtyard gets transformed into a book lover’s dream. An extra-long table displays hundreds of books for students to peruse as independent music plays softly in the background to create atmosphere. From the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the fair is a bustling hub that catches the attention of all passersby.

The suggested donation per book is one dollar for a paperback and two dollars for hardcovers. There are also records, mystery “bargain bricks” and IMC merchandise such as stickers, bookmarks and tote bags.

Founded in 2009, the IMC is an organization which aims to enrich the cultural life of both the University of South Alabama and the local Mobile community through promoting independent music. The organization is a collective in the sense that everyone contributes, involving students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the broader community.

The IMC sponsors events with musicians and storytellers, which are free for South students. Anybody is welcome. They strive to bring a mix of local, regional and national musicians to Mobile, especially those who would not otherwise visit this city. Phone-free and intimate, these listening-room concerts are meant to bring a sense of connection between the music, performer and the community.

Unfortunately, their previous venue, Satori Coffee House, closed down in the fall. This leaves the IMC in need of a replacement site. They have had several events at Callaghan’s Irish Social Club and will likely continue to hold events there. They are currently still searching for viable venues.

Students looking to volunteer with the organization can contact the IMC on InvolveSouth. Be on the lookout for posters and messages in the Daily Digest pertaining to upcoming events.
