On Feb. 24, Mobile for Palestine, in conjunction with the Next Gen Voices Project, held its “A Day for Palestine” event in Mardi Gras Park. Over 100 people from the Mobile area came out with signs and flags to peacefully protest the Israel-Hamas war.
The rally was aimed at expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people in response to the ongoing war, which has led to the widespread displacement and death of thousands. Event organizers lamented that the death toll had soared since the first protest took place in December.
Mobile for Palestine was also joined by members of the Central Gulf Coast branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), a left-wing political party active in over 100 cities. PSL members demanded a ceasefire and an end to Israel’s presence in the Palestinian territories.
Following the rally, protestors viewed a screening of “Gaza Is Our Home” at Push Cinema. This documentary was produced by Monear Shaer, who sought to tell his personal story of how his family was devastated by the war. Attendees also had the opportunity to shop at a bazaar, which showcased Palestinian culture. The day ended with an authentic Palestinian dinner catered by Taste of Baladi.
Ahmed Zaitoun, the president of Mobile for Palestine, served as the head coordinator of A Day for Palestine. He credited his team for ensuring that the rally went smoothly, and he reflected on the importance the day held for him.
“This event was important to me because it gave us an opportunity to give a voice to the voiceless,” Zaitoun said. “It is crucial that we speak out about the current situation in Palestine because the Palestinian people are experiencing an immense amount of pain and suffering. On top of that, it was a great way to get the Mobile community together.”
Zaitoun noted that Mobile for Palestine’s first event in December had faced significant criticism. However, he was encouraged by an overall more positive reaction this time around.
“Seeing so many people in the community work as a collective to help an important cause is truly inspiring and reinforces the power of unity and shared purpose in creating meaningful change,” Zaitoun said.
Mobile for Palestine is continuing to organize protests in support of the Palestinian people.
