On April 17, the Muslim Student Association presented the “Gaza is Our Home” documentary, produced by Monear Shaer. The screening took place in the Marx Library auditorium at 5:30 p.m., and admission was free.
The documentary started with an auto-generated slideshow from Shaer’s iPhone about his 2021 trip to Gaza, his family’s homeland. As conflict escalated, he felt an obligation to “shine a light on the untold struggles of his people.” The film was produced independently, meaning he did not have the financial support of any studio.
The screening was sponsored by Mobile for Palestine, a local nonprofit organization that advocates for peace in Palestine. It followed a series of events in support of Palestine, such as several organized rallies and marches.

Following the screening was a Q&A session with part of the cast, including Shaer and his sister Nabeha Shaer. Audience members were able to ask questions to better understand the perspectives behind the film and to gain otherwise unknown insight. Shaer believed having the post-film discussions was an impactful way to connect with the audience.
Refreshments including popcorn, beverages, and pizza were served at the screening. Additionally, a shopping bazaar supplemented the event. One of the brands included was Paliwear, a Palestinian-owned clothing brand. At the event, they debuted an exclusive Mobile for Palestine tee shirt design. A portion of their profits will be allocated to supporting the people of Palestine. Another business present was Genuine Gems, a Gulf Coast-based brand that specializes in handmade jewelry. Kennedy Sanchez, the owner, was present to create custom designs featuring watermelon beads, a symbol of Palestinian resistance.
