Jaguar Football rewrites records within first four games of the season

“South Alabama is the Hottest Team in College Football,” said a Sept. 19 post on Rivals.com.

Within the first four games of the season, South Alabama has broken several records, gaining massive attention across the nation in the world of College Football.

After starting off the season with two losses, one to North Texas and one to Ohio, the Jags had two head-turning wins that grabbed the attention of viewers nationwide.

The first win of the season was against Northwestern State, where the Jags’ score against the Demons finished at a whopping 87-10. This broke the SBC record for highest points scored in a single game by a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team. This was head coach Major Applewhite’s first win at South Alabama. Quarterback Gio Lopez has also set the record for Passing Yards and Total Offense in a single game for the South Alabama Football team.

Notable plays came from Jamaal Pritchett, Chrystyile Caldwell, Laith Marjan, Jaden Voisin, Amarion Fortenberry, Julien Demby, Gio Lopez, Jeremiah Webb, DJ Thomas-Jones, Fluff Bothwell, Kentrel Bullock, PJ Martin, and Jarvis Durr.

On Sept. 19, the Jags held a powerful defensive line up against App State in Boone, NC, with a winning score of 48-14. This improved South’s overall record to 2-2, and because this game was South’s Sun Belt Conference Opener, the Jags are also at 1-0 in the conference.

“To be able to perform like this on the road against a quality opponent that has been a standard bearer in our conference for years was great,” said Applewhite. “You don’t want to throw a wet blanket on it, but there’s also a lot of things that we have to fix. It’s great that we all came together tonight and had this type of a win. We will build on this.”

Iverson Celestine, Blayne Myrick, Jordan Scruggs, and Darius McKenzie were among some of the other high performers in Boone.

According to usajaguars.com, “South Alabama has now scored 135 points in its last two games while surrendering just 24. That is the most in a two-game stretch in program history.”

Despite a rough start, South’s recent record-breaking performances have created great anticipation for the rest of the season! For complete coverage of South Alabama football, follow the Jags on social media @SouthAlabamaFB. For all South Alabama sports coverage, visit usajaguars.com.
