Second Year Experience Hosts Major Connections Tailgate

Not sure what major or minor to pursue? Looking for a career path that promises financial success? Look no further! The annual Major Connection Tailgate event has the answers you’re seeking. On Oct. 23, the Second Year Experience (SYE) Program hosted the Major Connection Tailgate at the USA Student Center Amphitheater from noon to 3 p.m. Cassie Gannaway from SYE Career Counseling and SYE coordinator Autumn Courtney made this event possible to help students explore majors that best fit their interests and future goals.

SYE is a program designed for second-year students at the University of South Alabama. It aims to help them grow personally and professionally, while connecting with peers and mentors to build a strong network for their future careers. Freshmen, undeclared students and those considering a change in major, had the opportunity to explore different academic paths and meet faculty members from various departments. Faculty at each table offered advice on careers, classes, and majors. Some tables featured games, prizes, and candy, making the event even more engaging.

Over 20 tables were present at the event. The Biomedical Sciences table focused on human biology, health, diseases, and also included a ring toss game. Faculty handed out informational pamphlets about department activities. The Marine Sciences table, which covers ocean life and ecosystems, showcased preserved sea creatures and featured a quiz on ocean facts, led by a Marine Science major. Auburn University’s pharmacy program, in partnership with South Alabama, had a table providing information about the pharmacy program on campus, offering students the opportunity to explore careers in this field.

In addition to the academic departments, various resource tables were present, such as the Office of Financial Aid, which helped students complete their FAFSA applications. The One Stop table offered support for students struggling with anxiety or food insecurity, while the Academic Advising table assisted students in scheduling appointments with advisors for those who had decided on their major.
