On Oct. 23, the university held its annual Transfer Connections event in the Student Center. This was one of several events honoring National Transfer Student Week, which takes place in the third week of October. This is the third consecutive year the university has commemorated the week, which aims to support transfer students.
“We are really trying to grow our transfer community. Incoming transfer students are often focused on financial aid and scholarships. We want to showcase offices that support students,” said Nani Perez, associate director of Academic Advising and Transfer Services. Perez served as the primary event planner.
A variety of organizations tabled at the event, providing information about their services. This included the Office of Adult Learner Services, the Center for Academic Excellence, the Office of Veterans Affairs, Study Abroad, and Title IX. Perez was joined by Raashad Daniels, the transfer student-at-large for the Student Government Association. Transfer Connections was held simultaneously with the Health and Wellness Fall Festival, which took place in the Student Center Amphitheater and featured many of the same organizations.
First-year and continuing students attended the event to learn more about campus resources.
“I thought Transfer Connections had a fantastic turnout,” said Lauren Rhodes, senior associate director of the Office of Financial Aid. “While it is geared primarily towards transfer students, it provides a great opportunity for all students to visit with on-campus departments in a casual atmosphere.”
“The Transfer Connection event was an exemplary gathering that garnered significant attendance,” said Roxanne Bates, assistant manager of the Office of Scholarship Services. “While primarily designed for transfer students, the event facilitated access to valuable information and a range of resources available at South for all participants. The enthusiasm shared among the participants was electrifying and extended to the various departments represented at the event.”
Perez is looking forward to holding more transfer events in the near future.
“In the spring, the transfer team is hoping to put on an event supporting one of our athletic teams – maybe our baseball or basketball team. I am super grateful for the South Alabama community,” said Perez.
