Around noon on Jan. 22, the USA Weather Alert system announced that the University will remain closed through Thursday, Jan. 23.
“The University of South Alabama will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23, due to the winter storm and hazardous road conditions in many areas. This includes online classes. In addition, the women’s basketball game scheduled for tonight in the Mitchell Center is postponed to Feb. 8.
“The Dining Hall is open today (Wednesday) until 7 p.m. and from 10:30 a.m.-7 p.m. on Thursday, but all other campus dining options are closed. The Jag Mart – located in Azalea Hall – has grab-and-go meals, snacks and drinks for students living on campus. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“Information regarding the University’s operating schedule on Friday, Jan. 24, will be provided by 3 p.m. on Thursday.
“USA Health is providing updates separately regarding operating hours for clinics, but all hospitals and the Freestanding Emergency Room remain open,” the email read.
Due to today’s snowmelt, roads remain slippery and dangerous to drive on.

As snow continues to fall, drivers are advised to stay home due to impassable roads.
At 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19, a USA Weather Alert email notified the University community of the campus’s closing on Jan. 21, ahead of the severe wintry conditions.
“The University of South Alabama will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 21, due to the expected winter storm. The Dining Hall will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, but all other campus dining options will be closed. Information regarding the University’s operating schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 22, will be provided by 5 p.m. on Tuesday,” the email read.
Automated messages regarding the closing were also sent via phone call and text.
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning in effect from Jan. 19 at 9 p.m. until Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. In addition, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Jan. 21 at 6 a.m. until Jan. 22 at 6 a.m.
Precautions should be taken to protect people, plants, pipes, and pets.
