From Jan. 17 to Jan. 19, members of the Blue Key Honor Society traveled to Northern Arizona University to attend the annual national conference. The Jags were represented by Chapter President Rebecca Oliver-Shepan and Vice President Thomas Dean.
The Blue Key Honor Society was founded at the University of Florida in 1924. Over the next century, the prestigious organization spread to different institutions across the world, establishing its own character and traditions along with each new chapter. The mission of the society remains to recognize college students who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service.
In 2022, the University of South Alabama Blue Key chapter was founded and later that year the Jaguars had the honor of hosting the annual conference on campus. The chapter hopes to produce an engaging student life with a litany of service opportunities for all students.
When asked about the role Blue Key can have in a student’s life, National Executive Director, and founder of the South Alabama chapter, Jeremy Sheffield, Ed. D said, “Joining Blue Key Honor Society provides students with an opportunity to grow as leaders while building a strong network of peers dedicated to the betterment of their university. The organization fosters a social and academically driven community, where members support one another and contribute meaningfully to campus life.”
The conference offered a unique opportunity to explore a variety of leadership techniques and best practices, while also showcasing the diverse traditions and goals of different chapters. Many chapters require students to go through arduous applications and lengthy interviews before being accepted into the society. To become a member of the Kansas State University chapter, one must apply in their freshman year and remain active until their senior year, where only 15 students are finally accepted. It is undoubtedly a grueling process with a definite reward.
“As a nationally recognized honor society Blue Key offers prestige, networking opportunities, and leadership experience that stand out on a resume. Employers and graduate programs recognize Blue Key members as well-rounded individuals who have excelled academically, socially, and philanthropically. More than just an honor, Blue Key is a community of driven peers who learn and grow together, developing essential leadership and personal skills that extend beyond college,” said National Director Jeremey Shefield.
An engaging lineup of workshops, keynote speakers and networking sessions was offered to attendees. Designed to empower and make a meaningful impact within their communities, the conference encouraged collaboration between members, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the discussions.
With next year’s conference set to be held at Clemson University, the South Alabama chapter is already looking ahead to new opportunities for leadership and collaboration. As recruitment continues, students who receive an invitation are encouraged to consider joining a society that has been fostering leaders for over a century.
