MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama baseball team pulled off an impressive upset victory in a home non-conference game, defeating the 13th-ranked SEC powerhouse Ole Miss Rebels with a final score of 14-5.
Offense was the main story in the Tuesday game between the Rebels and the Jags with South Alabama scoring 14 runs off of 14 hits, and Ole Miss scoring five runs on three hits. Junior Tyler Smith would pick up the win for South Alabama, with graduate student Dalton Brooks picking up the save. For Ole Miss, Taylor Rabe is credited with the loss.
South Alabama struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning. The scoring did not stop there though, as the Jags would score in six of eight innings, leading the Rebels from beginning to end. Ole Miss would get on the board with a couple of big hits in the fifth inning, then cut South Alabama’s lead to four runs highlighted by a Ryan Moerman sixth inning home run.
South Alabama would pull away after this though, with Dalton Brooks coming in and pitching 3.2 scoreless innings to save the game for the Jags. Brennan Holt was the star for the Jags on offense, going 3-4 with two RBIs, two doubles and a triple.
“I mean, it’s a big win. It’s just one win, not a statement win. We won against a good team,” said head coach Mark Calvi in an interview following the game, “We’re just, we’re really happy to beat an outstanding team”
The South Alabama baseball team finished its year with a 12-15 overall record and a 2-7 conference record.
