Nutrition shops are sweeping across America, mainly in southern states. Most of these shops use the brand Herbalife. Herbalife is a global nutrition company that sells weight management products, dietary supplements, and personal care items. Founded in 1980, it operates through independent distributors that sell the products directly to consumers and earn commissions by recruiting others to join the business. These local shops use these products to whip up different drinks, including loaded teas, meal replacement shakes, and even coffee.
It is easy to see the appeal. They’re low-calorie, look pretty, and tap into trendy wellness. There are about 10 of these shops in Mobile alone, and I decided to check out South Nutrition located on Old Shell Road. Their menu varies from loaded teas, meal replacement shakes, vegan and gluten free offerings, and plant-based nutrition drinks.
With over 30 options to choose from in the loaded teas section, I went with Miami Vice. The drink is a mix of strawberry and pina colada with a pomberry (pomegranate + raspberry) base. I’ve had loaded teas before back in high school, and compared to others, this one didn’t quite hit the mark. It wasn’t bad, but I’ve definitely had better. Different locations seem to tweak their recipes, which probably explains the variation in taste. Still, it was refreshing, especially on a warm March day.
Want a healthy protein shake or dessert? A mix of vanilla and peanut butter, the Blondie shake offers 250 calories of sweetness and creaminess. Honestly, it didn’t even taste like a protein shake, which for me is a plus. I’d definitely recommend it if you want something that feels more like a treat.
Prices at South Nutrition range from $7 to $10, and if you’re near campus, it’s super easy to find, being right across the street from the Baptist Student Center. Unfortunately, they no longer offer a student discount, but you could plan your visits to coincide with a campus organization’s spirit night to help raise funds for a worthy cause.
