MOBILE, Ala. – Senior Gabby Stagner made history on Friday, March 11, during a South Alabama win against Marshall when she broke the South Alabama softball program record for home runs and multiple-RBI games.
The Thundering Herd got off to a good early start against the Jags, scoring two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. However, South Alabama got on the board in a big way in the third inning. A fielding error led to Frankie Andujo scoring the first run for the Jags, and then came a record-breaking home run by Gabby Stagner. South Alabama held on to the lead from there, winning 5-3 with junior Tori Miller being credited with the win.
“Winning this game was huge. We’ve been struggling a little bit [lately]. Even when we’ve been up in games, we’ve let them get past us. This win was a huge step forward for us,” said freshman Frankie Andujo in an interview after the game.
The bigger story was the historic game by senior Gabby Stagner, who broke the South Alabama career multi-RBI game and home run record, both previously held by Kamdyn Kvistad. The third inning home run was Stagner’s 37th home run as Jaguar and her 38th game with multiple runs batted in. Stagner, who is a Mobile native and graduate of Faith Academy, has been a 4-year starter for South Alabama. She will look to finish the year strong and aims to continue adding to her record.
“It was great to see her do it. Gabby’s a team player and she’s been doing what she needs to, but it’s fun to see her get that moment, especially on her home field,” said coach Clark following the game.
