South Alabama’s First Year Council (FYC) and the Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a Spring Luau at the Student Rec center on Thursday afternoon. The FYC wanted to continue the tradition of hosting a big event, but due to Covid-19 FYC has not been able to host any spring events for the past two years.

When arrived Students were greeted and informed about South’s various organizations around campus. Delicious Luau appetizers and tropical refreshments were served to students as they mingled with one another around the pool area.

“Seeing the Outcome of the hard work and dedication that my First Year Councilors put into the Spring Luau, makes me proud to say I am their director. It was an honor to host an event to bring the USA Community together,” said FYC’s Director Maiben Mitchell.

Although the temperatures dropped later that evening the fun never stopped. Spring Luau ’22 shirts were passed out as cover ups and souvenirs to those that attended. Jaguar Productions, (JP) were also very grateful to be a part of this event, they displayed the movie and provided the DJ. The movie Sharkando, was shown along the big screen as it brightened the pool area under the night sky.

“My favorite memories of this event was watching the limbo contest, dancing to the music the DJ played, and watching students come together regardless of race, identity or background felt great,” said Mitchell. “The event was an overall success!”

This event was a great start to our first few days of spring, and a new beginning to a lot more warmer events to come at South!
