On April 2, the South Alabama Jaguars Men’s baseball team faced the Troy Trojans at Stanky Field in Mobile, AL. The Jaguars won over Troy 6-3.

The Jaguars right-hander senior Matt Boswell allowed one run on one hit in 5 2/3 innings to lead the Jaguars to a series-clinching win over Troy. Boswell (2-0) struck out eight and issued two walks to record his second win of the season. He retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced, and held Troy hitless through the first 5 2/3 innings of the game.

The Jaguars loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single by junior Cameron Tissue, walk by senior Michael Sandle and single to left center field by junior Ethan Wilson. Junior Caleb Balgaard followed with a walk to plate Tissue with the game’s first run. Senior Reid Powers then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that allowed Sandle to score and double the Jag lead at 2-0.

The Jaguars pushed its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out RBI single to right field by DeLaTorre that scored Powers, who led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stokes and advanced to third with one out on a balk by Troy left-hander Kyle Gamble.

The Jaguars took on Troy again on April 3 and came out victorious with a 8-0 win.

The Jaguars started out with a two-run lead in the bottom of the first. Tissue led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Sandle. A wild pitch from Troy right-hander Garrett Gainous allowed Sandle to move to third before Wilson drew a walk to put runners at the corners with no outs. Wilson stole second with one out following a strikeout of Balgaard by Gainous. Powers then delivered a one-out RBI single to right field to plate Sandle for a 2-0 Jaguar advantage.

The Jaguars again loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth on a leadoff walk by Tissue, intentional walk to Ethan Wilson with one out and Balgaard reached on a hit by pitch from Gainous. Powers followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Tissue for a 3-0 Jaguar lead. Hunter Stokes drew a walk to load the bases with two outs for Santi Montiel, who delivered a three-run double to left field to clear the bases for a 6-0 USA lead. They extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff solo home run to left field by senior Richard Sorrenti on a 1-2 pitch from Troy right-handed reliever Lance Johnson.

Head Coach Mark Calvi stated that the sweep is big for the Jaguars.

“A sweep is huge in this league, especially with a shortened conference schedule. Every win counts, I’m just really proud of our guys this weekend especially against Troy; they were a very good club coming in here hitting close to .300, and our guys did a really nice job.”

The Jaguars will return to play and will return to action on April 9, when it opens a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Little Rock at 6 p.m.
