On April 23, the South Alabama Jaguars Men’s baseball team faced Georgia State for game one at Stanky Field in Mobile, AL. The Jaguars won over GSU 4-2.
South Alabama jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when senior Michael Sandle doubled to left field with one out and scored one batter later on an RBI single through the right side of the infield by junior Ethan Wilson. Senior Reid Powers followed with a single to right-center field before a sacrifice fly to right field by senior Kaleb DeLaTorre scored Wilson to double the Jag lead at 2-0.
South Alabama right-hander senior Miles Smith struck out a career-high 11 batters in a career-best 7 2/3 innings pitched to lead the Jaguars to a 4-2 series-opening win over Georgia State.
Smith (3-0) allowed two runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts without issuing a walk to earn his third win of the season. Right-hander freshman Jeremy Lee tossed 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings and struck out two to record his first career save.
South Alabama loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third on a single by Sandle, hit by a pitch to Wilson, and walked by Powers. DeLaTorre then laid down a two-run suicide squeeze sacrifice bunt to plate Sandle and Wilson for a 4-0 lead.
April 24 baseball game two between the University of South Alabama and Georgia State, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Stanky Field, was postponed due to severe weather forecast for the Mobile area.
The baseball team swept a Sunday, April 25 doubleheader from Georgia State at Stanky Field for game three, winning 5-1, extending its win streak to eight games with the win in the series finale.
The Jaguars loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth on a hit by a pitch to Powers, a walk by DeLaTorre, and a single to center field by Stokes. Junior Cameron Tissue followed with an RBI single to shortstop to score Powers and tie the score 2-2.
Senior Hunter Stokes led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and scored on a one-out RBI double to center field by junior Andrew Bates for a 3-2 USA lead. Junior Santi Montiel delivered a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield later in the inning to score Bates and double the USA lead to 4-2.
South Alabama will return to action Friday, April 30, when it opens a three-game SBC series against Georgia Southern at 5:30 p.m. in Statesboro, GA.
