Socks are one of the most needed items during the colder months and many homeless people have no access to them. Mobile Homeless Connect collects all clothing items for homeless people during the winter months. Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) specifically is helping by collecting socks because it is one of the clothing items that Mobile Homeless Connect does not typically receive.
CSI hosts what they call Socktober on campus from October 13th to November 25th. During this time, anyone can drop off socks in a box at the Student Center Information Desk or the lobby of UCOMM. Socktober was organized by Brittany McMillian, the fundraising chair for Chi Sigma Iota.
“Personally, volunteering and giving back to the community is an important value of mine, which is the main reason I ran for this position.” McMillan said. “CSI holds service as a top priority as well. Seeing that we are in the counseling/mental health field, advocacy is important and I believe that the service is also a way to advocate for others.”
McMillan also commented that CSI hopes to collect at least 200 pairs of socks for the fundraiser this year. Socks are a necessity that some individuals don’t have and it will help the community.
There is no limit to the socks that can be donated, CSI encourages sock donations for men, women, children and infants. CSI has provided an email on the flyers for Socktober and they have a Facebook account as well should anyone have questions about the fundraiser.
