Many people can name at least one section of the first amendment, and one of the most common ones is freedom of speech. Speak Up South is helping students fully understand and exercise their first amendment rights.
The purpose of this organization is getting students on South Alabama’s campus a little bit more familiar with the first amendment and the rights that are entailed in that amendment. It’s sponsored by One For All which is a non-partisan organization and provides different schools across the country with the resources to heighten the mission of broadening people’s perspectives on the first amendment.
Chris Phengsisomboun, a representative of the organization, explains that “it’s a campaign rooted in a CA 486 class which is a commencement course for communication students that are geared towards PR and things like that.”
Students that are interested in learning more about the organization can follow the Instagram account associated with it (@speakupsouth) and be on the lookout for upcoming events the organization will sponsor including a pop up on October 16th and 17th from 11-1 p.m. outside the Student Center.
