What to Watch for in Jags Sports of Spring 2020

Last Fall, the South Alabama Jaguars saw some significant moments in sports. The Women’s Soccer team won the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship in Foley, Alabama. The Football team said goodbye to Ladd-Peebles Stadium in downtown Mobile as they will welcome their new on-campus stadium in the fall of 2020. Men’s and women’s basketball teams started their season going into the spring.

2020 is a new year and a new decade. This spring will be a continuation of exciting sports events to come for the University of South Alabama and the city of Mobile. There will be many games and events to watch for in organized sports. There are also clubs and other non-organized sports events will be thriving well this semester at the University of South Alabama.

The Men’s Basketball program are continuing their season after starting 11-7 (4-3 in Sun Belt conference play) in late 2019. The Men’s team is looking to find more consistency as they were selected by the Sun Belt Conference coaches to win the conference. They will play their next game at home in the Mitchell Center against the Georgia State Panthers (12-6) on Thursday, January 16th. The Women’s Basketball program is also looking to provide more consistency after starting the season 7-9 (2-2 in Sun Belt conference play). Before the season, the Jaguars were projected to finish fourth in the conference with one first-place vote out of 12. The Jags will travel to Atlanta to take on the Georgia State Panthers (4-11) on Thursday, January 16th.

The Men’s Tennis team will also be back competing when they travel to Tallahassee when they take on the Florida State Seminoles on Friday, January 17th. They will be one of 60 teams in the nation to be participating in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-off Weekend when they will be playing in College Station, Texas in a small tournament with Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, and Oregon. The Women’s Tennis team will be back after four competitive events with three consecutive days of matches in Fort Myers, Florida against Florida Gulf Coast on January 17th, Iowa on January 18th, and Middle Tennessee on January 19th.

The Men’s and Women’s track and field team will start their season on Friday, January 17th in the Samford Invite in Birmingham, Alabama. The Men’s golf program will continue their season on Monday, February 10th, when they host the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate. The Women’s golf program will continue their season after three main events on Sunday, February 16th, in New Orleans, Louisiana when Tulane hosts the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.

The Jaguars’ baseball program will start their season in a three-game home series with the Campbell Camels from Friday, February 14th to Sunday, February 16th. They will then proceed to a two-game series with the defending 2019 College World Series champions in the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Jaguars are the 23rd ranked team in the preseason rankings for the 2020 season.

The Jaguars’ softball program will start their season in a three-day series of five games in the NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic starting on Friday, February 7th in Clearwater, Florida. The Jaguars would be playing Texas State, Missouri, Minnesota, Illinois, and Notre Dame. The Jags are looking to come back from their underperforming 18-31 (7-20 in Sun Belt Conference play) record last year.
