Throughout the semester, Greek organizations will host philanthropy weeks, where they acquire most of their funding for their organization. This semester, there were many events hosted by the organizations to raise money. All were put together by the philanthropy chair of their organization, along with the participation of the entire chapter. All of the different chapters on campus participate in each other’s philanthropy weeks by creating a team and competing against the other sororities and fraternities.
Chi Omega’s philanthropic focus is supporting Make-A-Wish children in Alabama. Their philanthropy week was from April 13th to April 17th and consisted of events such as a fundraiser with South Nutrition, a trivia night, a viewing of “Pitch Perfect,” a bake sale, and a pickleball tournament. Whichever chapter acquires the most points through their philanthropy week is eligible to choose the order of the dances in Songfest–a dance competition hosted by Chi Omega–for the next semester. They raised over $2,000 during their philanthropy week, and all of the proceeds will go to Make-A-Wish Alabama.

Phi Mu’s philanthropic focus is supporting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN). Their philanthropy week was from March 30 to April 3 and consisted of Bingo with President Bonner, a pancake sale, a collaboration with Bop’s ice cream, a toy drive, and a basketball tournament. When asked about their philanthropy week, Sadie Fidler, their philanthropy chair, said, “The Children’s and Women’s Hospital has given us an immense amount of opportunities, and we have the best relationships with the people at the hospital.” Over the course of their philanthropy week, they raised over $3,000 for their organization and consistently volunteer with the hospitals around Mobile to help their philanthropy.

Alpha Omicron Pi’s philanthropic focus is supporting different arthritis foundations, including a camp for children with arthritis, Camp M.A.S.H. Their philanthropy week is from February 2 to February 7 and consists of a dirty soda bar, a fundraiser with Texas Roadhouse, a capture the flag event, Pie an AOII, and “Alpha Male,” a competition where each sorority and fraternity picks a representative and they have a pageant where one would be deemed as the “Alpha Male.” Over the past year, they have raised over $36,000 for different arthritis organizations and are looking forward to some of their members volunteering at Camp M.A.S.H. over the summer.
Alpha Gamma Delta’s philanthropic focus is to fight hunger. During the year, they work with different organizations, such as Feeding the Gulf Coast and The Jag Pantry. This semester, their philanthropy week was from Monday, February 23, to Friday, February 27. Their week consisted of Pie for a Purpose, a fundraiser with South Nutrition, Post for an Impact, and Play for a Purpose (a volleyball event against the fraternities on campus). Their philanthropy chair, Izzie Kieffer, said, “Philanthropy week was honestly such a fun experience to plan and bring to life. It took a lot of coordination behind the scenes, but seeing everything come together and watching everyone show up to support made it so rewarding. I felt really honored to be a part of it and to help create something meaningful for our chapter and our cause.” During their philanthropy week, they raised over $4,000, and many of their girls volunteered with the Jag Pantry during their Week of Service.
Kappa Delta’s philanthropic purpose is to support Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA). Their philanthropy week ran from April 6 to April 10 and consisted of events such as Pop into Philanthropy week, Paws and Pinwheels for PCAA, Katch a Kaydee, Ice Ice KD, and finally, Concert for a Cause. Their Philanthropy Chair is Hannah Uc, a member of PC ‘24, who was recently put into this position to develop plans for this week. This past semester, they raised over $1,000 for the PCAA organization. They also consistently worked with the local Girl Scout troops around Mobile and helped them sell over 100 boxes, all the proceeds going to the troop.

With all of these wonderful events hosted, we were able to see how much a campus can come together to raise money for meaningful organizations. The support from other sororities on campus emphasizes the immense sisterhood that is shared, not only inside one’s own sorority but also between chapters, as well as with nonaffiliated students.
